Sammie Lee Miller, Sr. came to walk the Earth on March 8, 1947 to parents, Samuel Richard Miller and Essie Mae (Williams) Miller.
To send flowers in memory of Sammie Lee Miller, please visit our Heartfelt Sympathies Store.
Sammie (Sam) was educated in Lee County Public Schools before leaving the farm life to pursue bigger dreams in New Jersey.
Same secured employment at Marcal Paper Mill Company and then Gallo Rock Quarry, alongside his Uncle George. While working at Gallo, Sam started attending truck driving school on the weekends. On August 12, 1973, Sam received his commercial driving license (CDL) from Interstate Transportation Trainers, Incorporated. This was an important day for him because it unlocked many opportunities for success.
When not working, you could find Sam hanging with his large extended family or fishing. Sam loved fishing, which he did every opportunity he had. Fishing seemed to bring a calm joy for him like no other.
Sam also enjoyed hunting for wild game. The wilder the meat, the better. You name it, he ate it!
Family and friends were important to Sam. He would not hesitate to express his satisfaction or dissatisfaction of their thoughts, beliefs and/or actions. His straightforward words and candidness many not have been appreciated at the time he spoke them, but later most realized he had a valid point and what he said was out of love.
Sam was preceded "home," into the realm of the ancestors by his parents, Essie Mae and Samuel Richard Miller; his siblings, Carrie Mae Miller, Gussie Boyd, Irene McDonald, Richard Miller, Isaac Miller (Martha Mae), Robert Miller and Jannie Marie Miller.
Sam was a mainstay in his family and community and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Sam is survived by his sisters: Gertrude Miller of Philadelphia, PA; Sarah Turner of Bishopville, SC; and Barbara Jean Hyatt (Jessie) of Parsippany, NJ.
Sam leaves six children to cherish and share the memories of his amazing life; Harry Hickman of Paterson, NJ; Levi Miller, Sr. of San Diego, CA; Sammie Lee Miller, Jr. of Bishopville, SC; Sharon McKie (Thomas) of Totowa, NJ; Jason Nicholas Van Dunk, Sr. of Greenwood Lake, NY; and Aunessa Diane Miller of Paterson, NJ.
Sam is also survived by his grandchildren who he loved dearly; Anita Shaw, Tameka Miller, Levi Miler, Jr., Elanna Miller, Sametra Miller, Danielle Miller, Jason Nicholas Van Dunk, Jr., Jaiden Miller-Hughes, and Izaiyah Miller-Nutty; three great-grandchildren; Amir Huger and Abilgail Shaw and the future Alanna Shaw.
Sam also leaves Sheila Table, many nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and many friends, who will miss him deeply.
The management and staff sincerely thank the family for entrusting with the final rites of Brother Sammie Lee Miller.
