"An angel was called home to her final resting place."

Ruby "Nell" Davis Johnson, affectionately known as "Nell", wife of the late John Wesley Johnson of Bishopville, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2019 at her home.

Nell was the fourth child out of five children born to the late Dan Davis and Ada Hickman Davis on July 25, 1937.

As a child, she was reared in Barnettsville Baptist Church. When she came to know the Lord, she was baptized and served on various ministries. She was the Church Clerk for many years as well as a faithful member of the Barnettsville Baptist Gospel Choir and YWA for many years. Later in life she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church of Sumter, South Carolina where she was a faithful member and served on the Pastor's Support Ministry for many years.

Nell attended Dennis High School and and Benedict College. During her earlier years, she was a Nurse's Assistant for Dr. Leroy Dennis for many years. She also worked a number of years for the Lee County Disability Board. She later began a lengthy career as a Teacher's Assistant for the Lee County School District for 34 years until she retired in 2011.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Johnson; her parents, Dan and Ada Davis, Jr.; and two sisters, Ida Mae March and Rosa Lee Weaver.

She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving son, David (Cynthia) Davis and a daughter, Jennifer Stuckey, both of Bishopville, SC: two grandsons, who loved her dearly, Derrick Jerome Davis, of Sumter, SC and David Montel Davis of Bishopville, SC; three great-grand children, Jaylen, Zyon and Syair; one brother, William (Maec) of Columbia, SC; one niece, Robin Weaver of Manhattan, NY; and a host of other relatives and friends.

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30

The Management and Staff of Square Deal Funeral Home sincerely thank the Johnson's family for entrusting us with the final rites of Sister Ruby Nell Davis Johnson.

As one year of my precious sister’s time in heaven is upon us, I say, thank You, Lord for Your many blessings. We count the seconds, minutes, hours, days in this past year as a blessing from You. While we sorely miss Nell, it’s not a loss, merely another Display of Your Mighty Handiwork.

Nell, my Mother's cousin, you will be missed. I have fond memories of Nell and Mrs Ada and all the kids (family) gathered at their home on any day. We will miss you and you were loved.

I am so grateful to God that in His infinite wisdom He had me grow up in the same house as Nell from the time I was 14 years old. I was taught to cook, do laundry, clean and last but not least, love God. Nell made sure I was in Christmas and Easter skits at church, that I sang on the choir. Nell stood in as my mother at my wedding, traveling to NY to do so. We shall spend eternity together.
